Glenglassaugh Distillery
Glenglassaugh distillery is located on the northern coast of the Scottish highlands, around 10 miles west of Banff. The distillery was built in the latter half of the Victorian era in 1874 by James Moir and became part of Highland Distillers in 1892. The distillery was, unfortunately, mothballed between 1907 and 1960 due a to a downturn in the market. And so, when production resumed, Glenglassaugh re-entered a completely different distilling landscape to the one it was used to in the Victorian era. A few years later in 1986 the distillery was closed again. The highly individualistic single malt was not very palatable in established blends, and when the Whisky Loch hit in the 1980s the distillery did not stand much chance of staying open.
However, in 2008 Glenglassaugh was bought by a Russian firm and production was restarted much to the surprise of many. Two ownership changes later, Glenglassaugh is now owned by Brown Forman, and some cleverly placed releases have seen this once surplus distillery emerge as a single malt.
Cadenhead
Cadenhead was first established by George Duncan in 1842, at 47 Netherkirkgate in Aberdeen, making it the oldest of Scotland’s independent bottlers. In 1972 J & A. Mitchell took over the business and moved operations from Netherkirkgate to Campbeltown. Nowadays, in addition to the high-end, non-coloured and non-chill-filtered single malts, Cadenhead has tasting rooms and shops in Edinburgh and London.
