Port Ellen 1982 20 Year Old Provenance Winter Bottling
A Port Ellen 1982 20-Year-Old single malt bottled and released as part of the Provenance range. Distilled in winter 1982, this Port Ellen malt was laid to rest in sherry cask number 3029, before being bottled in winter 2003. This independent release was bottled by McGibbon’s as part of the Provenance range – prior to the Provenance label being transferred to McGibbon’s parent company Douglas Laing & Co.
One of Scotland’s silent distilleries, Port Ellen’s whisky has become some of the most iconic in the world with the distillery gaining a cult following since its closure in 1983, just a few months after this whisky was distilled. Located on Islay’s southern coast, Port Ellen was founded by Alexander Kerr Mackay in 1825. An early centre for innovation and the development of the whisky industry, Port Ellen was the site for the development of ‘patent stills’ used to produce grain whisky, and the first distillery to install a spirit safe and build duty free warehousing. First closed for 37 years between 1930 and 1967, Port Ellen had a short-lived revival for 16 years before it again closed in 1983 when much of the distillery site was demolished. On the 9th October 2017, Port Ellen’s owners Diageo announced plans to reopen the Port Ellen and Brora distilleries, both previously closed in 1983, as part of a £35 million investment. Diageo aims for a rebuilt Port Ellen to reopen and resume production in 2022.
Originally created in 1947, Douglas McGibbon & Co is a subsidiary of independent bottler and spirit merchant Douglas Laing & Co, and would become famous for a range of ceramic golfing themed decanters launched in 1976. The Provenance range is a selection of small batch single malts from Scotland’s great distilleries, chosen to illustrate how the unique characteristics of Scotland’s whisky making regions impact the character and style of the spirit.
