Karuizawa Distillery & Number One Drinks
Karuizawa is, without doubt, the most wanted closed distillery stock in the world. Certainly, those who bought the remaining Karuizawa casks when the distillery closed made a fortuitous purchase. Karuizawa opened its doors in 1955 until being mothballed in 2000 and eventually closed in 2011, with the land being sold in 2012, just before Yamazaki brought Japanese whisky to the world’s attention by picking up dozens of awards across many categories. All the whisky that remained in cask was purchased, rebranded, and released as a series of luxury products.
Many of these casks were purchased by Marcin Miller and David Croll, the founders of Number One Drinks Company. The two had sampled 30+ year old Karuizawa that was about to be blended by Kirin and saved the casks so that they could be bottled and released as single malts.
This bottle is one of the high-age statement Karuizawa releases from Number One Drinks, hailing from a single cask. As such, this bottle has attributes enviable of other Japanese single malts on the market: vintage, age statement, single cask.
