Springbank 1919 50 Year Old Bottled 1970 – First “Pear Shape” Bottling
Springbank 1919 50 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This is one of the rarest and most sought after bottlings of Springbank available to buy and carries the oldest Springbank age statement.
This whisky was distilled in 1919, an eye-watering 102 years ago, at a time when the world was emerging from its first major conflict and prohibition in the US was just beginning. It was then laid in a cask to mature for five decades until 1970 when it was bottled.
This is the first bottling of the Springbank 1919 50 Year Old and it is presented in a pear-shape bottle at 26 2/3 fl oz. A couple of years later, the 1919 whisky was rebottled into a taller, standard shaped bottle and it is this second iteration that holds the record for the most expensive bottle of Springbank after it sold for £266,200 at auction. It cannot be overstated that this rebottling houses the exact same whisky as this pear-shaped bottle of 1919 whisky and shares the same scarcity.
The Springbank 1919 50 Year Old is an incredibly valuable insight into the past and is a piece of history, not only for the Springbank distillery but for Scotch whisky as a whole. Its fifty years in the cask spanned some of the most evolutionary years of the 20th century and it emerged to a different world in 1970.
