North Port Brechin 1978 SMWS 74.1
Distilled in North Port in 1978, this bottle is from the first cask of North Port Brechin bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. SMWS 74.1 was bottled in 1989 into the classic SMWS style bottle and label.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society began in 1978 with a group of friends, initiated by Phillip Hills, who purchased a cask from Glenfarclas together. The success of this cask purchase led to a small bottling run, and today Glenfarclas still holds the SMWS code 01. The group of friends expanded to a small, informal society, and more cask purchases were made, each bottled and distributed among the group. As private bottlings, these bottles couldn't carry the names of the distilleries on the labels and so the code system was devised. In 1983, just 5 years after that first cask purchase, the group had established itself as a public membership society and purchased its first property, The Vaults.
SMWS bottlings have a unique coded system to denote the distillery and edition. Many of the early decimal numbers are therefore the most sought after of the editions
A now silent distillery, North Port operated from its establishment in 1820 until it was mothballed in 1983. The distillery is located in Brechin, Angus and was established in its first coneption by a farming family in the area. It originated as the Townhead Distillery before becoming Brechin Distillery in 1823. The name was then changed again to its final iteration, North Port Distillery, in 1839 which it would remain until being mothballed in 1983.
