Macallan 1989 Exceptional Cask Cask Strength

This Macallan 1989 Cask Strength single malt is the 5th entry into the prestigious Macallan Exceptional Single Cask range. Distilled on the 19th January 1989, and laid to rest in Single Oloroso sherry butt number 552 for 14 years before being bottled on the 30th November 2003. Bottled at a 59.2% cask strength, a yield of 777 bottles of this rare and very sought after Macallan were released. This limited release comes complete with an extra cork stopper in the original presentation tube, signed by Macallan Master Distiller Bob Dalgarno.

Macallan is one of the most sought-after distilleries for collectors and investors, consistently appearing in the top rankings. The Macallan distillery was founded by Alexander Reid in 1824, and was one of the first Scottish distilleries to be legally licenced. Beginning with just two stills housed in a wooden shed, from the 1950’s onwards Macallan has been greatly extended as the distillery’s reputation has increased reaching twenty-one stills in 1975. In 1999, the Edrington Group became the majority shareholders of Macallan and have continued to promote Macallan’s growth as a luxury single malt brand. A new Macallan distillery opened in May 2018, equipped with 36 stills with a capacity of 15 million litres of alcohol a year.

Macallan’s Exceptional Single Cask series are unique limited-edition bottlings from a single cask, hand chosen by the Macallan whisky makers. The Macallan whisky makers do not go looking through the distillery warehouses for casks to join this series, they are found during routine assessment and sampling then elevated to the status of Exceptional Single Cask. As a result, whisky lovers can be sure that each single malt in this collection is nothing short of extraordinary. Originally presented in 50cl ‘dumpy’ style bottles, the Exceptional Single Cask range was relaunched in 2017, with a range of 70cl bottlings ranging from 12 to 22 years-old. The collection has expanded since then, when the Macallan whisky makers happen upon a cask worthy of joining the collection.
