Karuizawa-Yamanashi Gloria Ocean Special Grade 1960s

Karuizawa-Yamanashi Gloria Ocean Special Grade 1960s

This non-age statement whisky was distilled by Sanraku-Ocean Co Ltd. for their Gloria Ocean Range. After a merger between Sanraku Shuzo Co. and Ocean, Sanraku Ocean gained ownership of both Yamanashi and Karuizawa distilleries. The bottle contains single malt from one of Japan’s best-loved but demolished distilleries, Karuizawa, and grain whisky from Yamanashi.

Yamanashi was closed in 1969 and production was moved to Kawasaki. However, Kawasaki was also closed in 1987 as Sanraku-Ocean was struggling to keep up with the likes of Nikka and Suntory, The closure of Kawasaki allowed the company to focus solely on the Karuizawa single malt.

Sanraku-Ocean was renamed Sanraku Inc in 1987, and again in 1990 to Mercian. They merged with Kirin in 2001, subsequent to the closure of Karuizawa distillery. Karuizawa was demolished in 2011.

Karuizawa stock is depleting; there are only a very small number of Karuizawa casks left in the world, and so prices are on the rise. Recently, a bottle of Karuizawa sold for £363,000 at auction, making it the most expensive bottle of Japanese whisky ever sold.

The bottle is a premium version of the Gloria Ocean blend and was bottled by Sanraku-Ocean in the 1960s.
