Ardbeg 1974 Connoisseurs Choice bottled1996

Ardbeg 1974 Connoisseurs Choice Map Label

This fantastic Ardbeg was distilled in 1974 and bottled by Gordon and Macphail under the Connoisseurs Choice Label in 1996, making it around 22 years old. Vintage Ardbeg is relatively scarce and this is a lovely example in great condition with its original box. The Connoisseurs Choice series is a long running series by Gordon and Macphail and this particular iteration is with the beautiful map label.

For a lot of whisky drinkers, Ardbeg is the number one distillery when it comes to huge, smoky, classic west coast single malts. Despite huge demand and a growing reputation as a collectors malt, Ardbeg is still a relatively small distillery producing 2,100,000 litres per year. It is amazing to think that just over a decade ago the distillery only had three core range bottles and a handful of limited-edition releases. Ardbeg has had a tumultuous history. From multiple changes of ownership to becoming one of the most in-demand distilleries in the world, Ardbeg had been through it all.

Gordon & Macphail are one of the oldest whisky bottlers to exist in the world. Bottling over 350 expressions from over 70 distilleries, as well as bottling whisky for numerous large distilleries in Scotland for decades. Bottling whisky for 115 years and now proud owners of the Benromach distillery since 1993. They did nearly purchase Strathisla Distillery from Seagram’s in the 1950’s, but Seagram’s wanted £71,000, whereas Gordon & Macpahil only offered £70,000. Imagine.
