Fettercairn distillery was built in 1825 by Sir Alexander Gladstone and was soon sold to Sir John Gladstone, father of British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. In 1923 the distillery was sold to Associated Scottish Distillers which ceased trading in 1954, after which point Fettercairn was transferred to private hands until 1971 when it was bought by Whyte & Mackay.

Fettercairn has been bottled as a single malt both independently and officially, with a 50 year old being released in 2018 as well as a number of new aged core range bottles.
