SMWS 45.1 Dallas Dhu 1975 12 Year Old
Dallas Dhu is located in Moray, Speyside and was founded in 1899. This whisky was bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in 1987 after maturing for 12 years.
As is the case with a few formerly closed distilleries, Dallas Dhu’s owners, Diageo, are looking at the possibilities of re-opening the stills and buildings for production. A feasibility study was done and while nothing has yet come of it any future movement is likely to have a knock on impact to secondary market prices if the likes of Brora, Port Ellen and Rosebank are anything to go by. Currently Dallas Dhu sits in a similar realm to that of other closed distilleries like Imperial and Littlemill; stocks of it are still somewhat available and the current site is being run by Historic Scotland as a museum.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) was formed in 1983 as an exclusive members club. These days they release whisky from over 125 different distilleries worldwide. Renowned for their single cask, cask strength bottlings, many early SMWS bottles are highly sought after.
SMWS bottlings have a unique coded system to denote the distillery and edition. Many of the early decimal numbers are therefore the most sought after of the editions and their Japanese whisky bottlings are becoming particularly desirable.
