Port Ellen 1983 21 Year Old Old Malt Cask
This dram is from the famed Port Ellen distillery which closed its doors in 1983, and was distilled in the same year. Port Ellen has gained a cult-following and stellar reputation in the years since its closure, and so it was welcome news for whisky-lovers everywhere when Diageo, the owners of Port Ellen, announced that they would invest £35 million into the refurbishment and reopening of Port Ellen and Brora, another closed distillery.
This 21-year-old expression was matured in a sherry cask and bottled in 2004 by Douglas Laing & Co Ltd. for their Old Malt Cask Range as one of only 525 bottles.
Scheduled for re-opening in 2023, Port Ellen has garnered a cult following that is delighted by the news. Its closure in 1983 saw the destruction of its stills which is always going to be the biggest point of contention for Port Ellen drinkers and analysts in the future, how close could the distillate really be? Rumoured to only produce 500,000 litres per year for the first decade of production, Port Ellen will be something to really focus on as people prepare to compare old and new in the next few years.
