A classic Highland single malt from the Glendronach distillery, this vintage bottling was distilled in 1968 and laid to rest for 25 years of maturation in sherry casks. Bottled in 1993, this expression is from the same period as Glendronach’s legendary Air Nippon bottlings of the same age and vintage. A ‘sherry monster’ this Glendronach 1968 received an impressive 90 points from Whisky Fun.
Glendronach was founded in 1826, by a syndicate of farmers headed by James Allardes. The Glendronach distillery quickly built a strong reputation, with its malt on sale in London soon after the distillery’s foundation. A fire virtually destroyed the distillery in 1837, although a new owner Walter Scott purchased the site and rebuilt Glendronach in 1852. The distillery was mothballed between 1996 and 2002, before it was purchased by the BenRiach Distillery Company in 2008 who revitalised the Glendronach range. In 2016, the BenRiach Distillery Company including Glendronach were acquired by Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whisky producer Brown-Foreman, for a price of £285 million. A favourite for sherried whisky lovers, maturation in ex-sherry casks is Glendronach’s signature style, although some malt is initially laid to rest in ex-bourbon casks to pick up a vanilla sweetness before being racked into ex-sherry. Single cask vintage bottlings of Glendronach have built a considerable following amongst whisky enthusiasts and collectors, and are becoming increasingly sought after.
