Bowmore 12 year old 75cl 1980s
Bowmore distillery is located on the Isle of Islay and is the birthplace of this particular expression. The whisky in this bottle was distilled in the late 1960s or 1970s and aged for 12 years before being bottled by the distillery in the classic brown and gold dumpy bottle of the 1980s. The bottle is sold with its original gold tube.
Bowmore is the oldest distillery on Islay however it didn’t have much notable history until Suntory bought 35% in Morrison-Bowmore in 1989. After this point we saw huge changes in how Bowmore was marketed to the world. The launch of Black Bowmore in 1993, arguably, signalled the induction of whisky as a collectable asset. Suntory bought Morrison-Bowmore outright in 1994. Following this was the launch of Bowmore 15 Darkest in 1999, and the eventual release of the oldest and most sought-after Bowmore stocks to the world. There was also the change in distillate style after Suntory became involved, with the pre1990 stock of Bowmore like this one being given the ‘lavender’ moniker.
