Blair Athol Distillery
Blair Athol is located in Pitlochry on the banks of the River Tay and was founded in 1798, making it one of the oldest legal distilleries in Scotland. The lease was passed from hand to hand until 1886 when the distillery was purchased by Peter Mackenzie (founder of Dufftown).
The distillery was mothballed from 1932 to 1949 and was bought by Arthur Bell & Sons in this period. Blair Athol became an integral part of Bell’s best-selling blend, meaning that the distillery capacity was increased in the 1970s.
After Guinness purchased Bell’s in 1985 they opened a visitor centre at Blair Athol, making it the 4th distillery in Scotland to have a visitor centre. Today, it is the fourth most visited distillery in Scotland.
