Ben Nevis Distillery
Ben Nevis distillery was officially founded in 1825 when ‘Long’ John Macdonald took out a license on the plant. By the beginning of the 20th century Macdonald’s son, Peter, had made the Long John’s Dew of Ben Nevis brand extremely successful. To cope with demand a second distillery, ‘Nevis’ was built next to the original.
However, Nevis closed in 1908 and its sister distillery ran sporadically throughout the ensuing years and the first half of WWII. Then, the distillery was bought by Joseph Hobbs, a Canadian entrepreneur. After a brief mothballing, production was back in full swing in 1955 along with the addition of a new Coffey still.
In 1989, after another change of ownership, a period of mothballing, and a refurbishment, Ben Nevis was sold to Nikka, a Japanese distiller. Ben Nevis has shone under Nikka’s wing as is evident in special releases such as the Ben Nevis 25 YO Taketsuru, a bottling named for Nikka’s founding father.
