Distilled in 1937 this eye catching bottle of Balvenie was matured for 50 years before being bottled at cask strength in December 1987. The label style matches the designs used in on bottles from Balvenie's bigger (and then better known) sister distillery, Glenfiddich from 1937. The leaflet that comes with the bottle has this to say about the whisky inside the bottle:

"To the best of my knowledge, no other fifty year old pure malt whisky has been bottled at such a high natural cask strength. This has contributed to make The Balvenie 50 year old Pure Malt Whisky such a rare phenomenon. For a whisky so old, it has retained a remarkable degree of body whilst achieving a sweetness and richness of taste that only whiskies of this age can impart. Incomparable and singular quality" Wallace Milroy Author of Malt whisky Almanac.

It seems odd to think that Balvenie was once an obscure brand, dwelling in the shadow of its colossal big brother, Glenfiddich. Despite the relative obscurity of the brand, whisky and hospitality gurus the Milroy, saw potential in Balvenie when no one else did. From their specialist shop in Soho the Milroy’s began to sell single malt whiskies never-before-seen on the open market, and were invited to visit the Glenfiddich and Balvenie distilleries.

“Peter Grant Gordon invited us to visit Glenfiddich and Balvenie distilleries, when we noticed four cask of Balvenie 50 Years Old gathering dust in the corner of the warehouse. After a few drams Peter agreed to bottle these and sell most of these to us exclusively for £150 which we offered to our Japanese customers for £360 per-bottle and sold most of it very quickly and this resulted in Wallace and I being invited to spend one month in Japan promoting this at £1,000 per-bottle with the Seven Importers Group” - John Milroy

By 1988 the Milroy’s were in possession of 360 bottles of 50-year-old Balvenie. Most of these went to the Asian markets and it is one of the rare few that stayed in the UK and was not opened and enjoyed that we offer here for sale on behalf of our client.
