Balblair 1979 Scottish Malt Whisky Society 70.1
This Balblair whisky was distilled in 1979 and bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky society as the first cask from the SMWS.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society began in 1978 with a group of friends, initiated by Phillip Hills, who purchased a cask from Glenfarclas together. The success of this cask purchase led to a small bottling run, and today Glenfarclas still holds the SMWS code 01. The group of friends expanded to a small, informal society, and more cask purchases were made, each bottled and distributed among the group. As private bottlings, these bottles couldn't carry the names of the distilleries on the labels and so the code system was devised. In 1983, just 5 years after that first cask purchase, the group had established itself as a public membership society and purchased its first property, The Vaults.
Balblair is a highland distillery located in Edderton, Ross-shire. The distillery has been in operation since 1790 and, despite a rebuild in a second location in 1895, continues to use its original water source, the Ault Dearg burn. The Balblair Distillery was in the hands of the Ross family until 1894 when Alexander Cowan took over the tenancy. Balblair eventually came under the ownership of Inver House Distillers Limited whose group includes Knockdhu, Old Pulteney, and Balmenach.
